15-year-old Callum Ormond is a hunted fugitive.

When Callum’s father, an Australian photo-journalist, went to Ireland to gather footage for a documentary,  he stumbled upon a secret that could make their family insanely rich.

Unfortunately, Callum’s Dad contracted a fatal disease and could not communicate verbally with his family before he died. While he was still able to draw, Callum’s Dad made a collection of pictures that hold clues to the “Ormond Singularity.”

Ruthless, powerful people are after the secret to the Ormond Singularity, and they know about the drawings. A stranger warns Callum that he must elude capture for 365 days.

January is the first in a series of 12 (one for each month of the year) called “Conspiracy 365.”

Complete with fast-paced action, mystery, a male protagonist, and a tantalizing cover, this book will strongly appeal to middle school boys.  With a 4.6 reading level, it’s a good suggestion for reluctant readers.

In fact, I got on the trail of this book series from reading a School Library Journal online article entitled “What Teens are Really Reading:  A librarian’s informaral survey uncovers the hottest YA fiction.”
Happily, there is no swearing and Callum is a respectful, responsible kid that cares about his family.

While perhaps not as well written as books by Roland Smith and Gordon Korman, these books should appeal to fans of those authors.

Have you read other books in the series? If so, how do they compare to this first book?

Void, by Mark Mynheir (c2009)

This book has a futuristic setting and some interesting and scary concepts to consider.

A murder has been committed in close proximity to a biogenetics laboratory.  Is there some connection?   In reality, what is going on inside the lab?

Agent Robbie Sanchez and her colleagues, members of the Florida Department of Law enforcement,  are called to the crime scene where the bizarre story begins.  Humans are being cloned in the lab, and it gets out of control.  The clones enter the world outside the lab and begin violently murdering Christians.   Worse yet, they are vying for human souls.  God will get the victory, but lives are being snuffed out.  The clones must be stopped!

“Tim Porter, an agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, is assigned to investigate the murder of a young man, but fears for his daughter’s safety after she agrees to participate in a “training” program run by Dr. Walter Simmons, who became popular with his New Age psychological tapes.” (Follett Titlewave)

This fast-paced, action-packed book was hard to put down!

Tim Porter, an agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, learns his highly-intelligent, beautiful daughter Ruby, has entered an “instituion of higher learning” that is in reality a dangerous cult.  Suspicious actitivity on campus, severe rules, and eventually a murder cause Tim and his fellow officers to ramp up an investigation of the campus and its charismatic (and very corrupt) leader Dr Simmons.

Ruby seems in imminent danger and time is running out.  Can they rescue her before she is the next  murder victim?

Laura Fountain found out she had liver cancer while pregnant with her fourth child.  Advised to abort the baby and begin life-saving chemo, Laura chooses to give life to her baby and die in the process.

Soon after Laura’s death, mysterious “Aunt Cheryl” shows up on the Fountain family’s doorstep, offering her temporary help with caring for the 4 Fountain children.

Now Reed Fountain, their father, is dead, too–accidentally killed by the youngest Fountain child–two-year-old Tristan.   Crushed by grief, the older Fountain children can hardly bear to look at Tristan (the one responsible for the death of both of their parents!) or even talk with each other about what has happened to their family.

In the midst of the tragedy, Aunt Cheryl is taking over their house, their family, their very lives.  But something is not right.  Can the Fountain children come together as a family again to figure it out and protect Tristan from those people who would destroy him?

Caroline B. Cooney is one of my favorite authors.  Her books are full of suspense but they often address some important topic like racism (Burning Up), bioterrorism (Code Orange), ethnic cleansing in Africa/immigration (Diamonds in the Shadows), or blended families (A Friend at Midnight).  Caroline also casts Christianity, belief in God, and involvement with a local church in a positive light.
This book is no exception. The mystery story is riveting, and some of the characters turn to God and their pastor for help.  But Caroline also uses this story to raise the reader’s awareness of the frighteningly powerful influence television wields in our society today.  She also sends a strong message of family fidelity.
Highly recommended for grades 6 and up.

Adam, by Ted Dekker

Behavioral psychologist Daniel Clark works for the FBI. For over a year he has been stalking a killer called Eve. Daniel’s obsession with understanding the mind of  “Eve” and trying to catch this serial killer have cost him his marriage. During every new moon the killer abducts and murders  a young woman, and there have been 15 so far. As the killer anticipates the death of #16, Daniel and his partner, a pathologist, almost rescue the young woman. However,”Eve” intercepts them and shoots Daniel in the head, killing him and retrieving his victim.  Daniel is miraculously resuscitated after being dead for almost thirty minutes.

Unknown to Daniel, his ex-wife, Heather, has begun to compulsively study and track “Eve.”  Daniel had ignored his wife as he studied endlessly to understand the criminal mind, going on to give lectures and tours all over the country. Now Heather has become as obsessed in her quest to understand and try to anticipate “Eve’s”  next move.

What Heather and Daniel don’t know is how close to home “Eve” will strike while chosing his next victim. This time it may be an “Adam.”  A fierce and horrific battle for Daniel’s life and soul begins.

This fast-paced thriller, full of twists, is hard to put down. It emphasizes how evil and dark the world is and that a real spiritual battle takes place. There is an encounter with demon possession and the performing of an exorcism which is chilling and scary,  but God is greater than Satan and there is victory and God is glorified.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes nail-biting action. It also causes us to examine our spiritual walk and rejoice that we love and serve an omnipotent God.

Grades 9 and up.
